Rolex and the Championships, Wimbledon
Rolex has been associated with Wimbledon since 1978. The oldest Grand Slam® tournament is the temple of lawn tennis, the original game. It’s also where athletes write their names into sporting legend.
Rolex is today the Official Watch and a main partner of all major world tennis events. It was at Wimbledon in 1978 that everything began between the crown brand and this discipline which then experienced an unprecedented global resonance.
In southwest London, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club hosts The Championships. The oldest tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon has been the cradle of the discipline and the temple of lawn tennis since its creation in 1877.
“IF YOU CAN ENCOUNTER TRIUMPH AFTER DEFEAT AND RECEIVE THESE TWO LIARS ON ONE FRONT…”
A TEMPLE OF TENNIS TRADITION
On the pediment of the players' entrance to the Centre Court, which can accommodate 15,000 spectators, are inscribed two lines from the poem If by Rudyard Kipling:
If you can meet Triumph after Defeat
And receive these two liars on the same front...
These verses summarize the philosophy of this tournament. Because, at Wimbledon, even more than victory, it is the humility and perseverance of the champions that make the discipline great.
THE PLACE OF GREAT DUELS
Indeed, on the Centre Court of Wimbledon, the finals are of such intensity that they are remembered as extraordinary moments in the history of tennis. So much so that the meetings between Rod Laver and John Newcombe, Björn Borg and John McEnroe, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are all epic fights which have entered the legend of Wimbledon and world tennis.
It is this unprecedented level of sporting excellence that has resonated with the values of the Rolex brand. A natural partnership that has lasted for more than 50 years and has extended to all major events in the discipline.
