Grand Seiko unveils its first pavé-set masterpiece

 

Inspired by the lion emblem, Grand Seiko’s symbol since its inception, the SBGD223 is a remarkable Spring Drive timepiece crafted by the esteemed Micro Artist Studio.

The SBGD223 captures the image of a lion emerging from darkness through a striking combination of diamonds and black spinels. Over 600 meticulously set diamonds of varying sizes adorn the Platinum 950 case and dial, their brilliance contrasted by the deep intensity of black spinels. This dazzling composition highlights the exceptional craftsmanship of Grand Seiko's artisans. Several gemstones also serve as functional hour and minute markers, blending haute joaillerie with horological precision. While Grand Seiko has previously explored high-jewellery designs, the SBGD223 is the first to feature a pavé setting.

 

 

 

 

The Micro Artist Studio, recognized as one of the world's premier high-end watchmaking workshops, is known for its unparalleled finishing techniques. Uniquely, the studio integrates cutting-edge Spring Drive technology, developed exclusively in Shinshu, Japan, into its masterful creations.

 

 

 

 

Turning the watch over reveals the Caliber 9R01 Spring Drive 8-Day movement, a masterpiece of precision and elegance. With an extraordinary power reserve of eight days and an accuracy of ±10 seconds per month, it embodies both technical innovation and artistic expression. The movement’s single bridge traces the contours of Mount Fuji, while the wheel behind it evokes the rising sun. Rubies shimmer like the lights of Suwa City, and the power-reserve indicator represents nearby Lake Suwa, paying tribute to the region’s natural beauty.

 

 

 

 

The Grand Seiko Masterpiece Collection Spring Drive 8-Day Jewellery Watch SBGD223 will be available exclusively at Grand Seiko Boutiques starting in May 2025.
